Car insurance in Rochester Hills, Michigan costs about $228 a month for full coverage in Insurify's median of real quotes for the Rochester, MI area, which takes in the Rochester Hills ZIPs (updated October 20, 2026), the lowest credible published figure. ValuePenguin's Rochester Hills figure is $255 (October 13, 2026), and InsuranceQuotes.com's modeled Rochester rate is $328. That range reflects different drivers and coverage, not a quote. Your cost turns on PIP choice, liability limits, drivers and vehicle.
Ask three rate sites how much car insurance costs in Rochester Hills and you'll get three answers roughly $100 a month apart: $228, $255 and $328 for full coverage. Part of the muddle is a mailing quirk. The Postal Service files 48306, 48307 and 48309 under "Rochester," so some publishers price Rochester Hills addresses without ever printing the city's name.
This guide leads with the lowest credible figure, dates every source, explains the disagreement, and shows what moves a Rochester Hills driver's price, from PIP choice to deer and an Oakland University student on the policy.
How Much Is Car Insurance in Rochester Hills, Michigan in 2026?
As of October 2026, the lowest credible published figure is Insurify's $228 a month for full coverage in the Rochester, MI area, with ValuePenguin's Rochester Hills figure at $255 and other 2026 studies reaching $328.
Insurify's number is the median of real quotes for drivers aged 20 to 70 with clean records and credit of 600 or higher, updated October 20, 2026. Insurify labels the area "Rochester, MI"; it covers the Rochester Hills ZIPs, but the page never names Rochester Hills, and its own FAQ says $229. Source: Insurify.
ValuePenguin is the only mainstream publisher with a row labeled Rochester Hills: $255 a month for a 30-year-old man with full coverage, updated October 13, 2026. Source: ValuePenguin. At the top, InsuranceQuotes.com's "Rochester" figure is $328 a month, or $3,933 a year, with rates as of August 31, 2026. Source: InsuranceQuotes.com.
Full coverage means Michigan's required PIP, property protection and liability plus collision and comprehensive. None of these numbers is a quote. If you're choosing a company rather than setting a budget, our guide to which carriers fit Rochester Hills drivers covers that.
Where Do the Rochester Hills Figures Come From?
Each figure comes from a different publisher pricing a different sample driver on a different date, so this table lists every source we used with its area label, profile and update date.
| Source | Area (as labeled) | Full coverage | Minimum / liability | Sample profile | Updated |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Insurify | Rochester, MI area (Insurify's label; it covers the Rochester Hills ZIPs) | $228/mo ($229 in its FAQ) | $142/mo ($130 in its FAQ) | Median of real quotes; ages 20 to 70, clean record, credit 600+ | Oct 20, 2026 (tables as of Sep 30) |
| ValuePenguin | Rochester Hills | $255/mo | Not published | 30-year-old man; 8 Michigan insurers | Oct 13, 2026 |
| InsuranceQuotes.com | "Rochester" (3 ZIPs) | $328/mo ($3,933/yr) | $84/mo, priced at 20/40/10, below the legal minimum | Single 40-year-old, good credit, clean record; 100/300/100, $500 deductibles | Rates as of Aug 31, 2026 |
| InsuranceQuotes.com | Oakland County (63 ZIPs) | $362/mo ($4,343/yr) | $93/mo (20/40/10) | Same driver and limits | Rates as of Aug 31, 2026 |
| Insurify | Michigan statewide | $229/mo | $130/mo | Same method as its city pages | Oct 20, 2026 |
| ValuePenguin | Michigan statewide | $260/mo | Not published as an average | Same driver | Oct 13, 2026 |
We left out undated pages, pages whose figures contradict themselves badly, and one widely repeated annual number its publisher calls a state-level benchmark. Insurify leads because it's the lowest dated full-coverage figure, with a described driver, covering the Rochester Hills ZIPs.
Why Do Some Studies Say "Rochester" Instead of Rochester Hills?
Because the Postal Service's default city name for 48306, 48307 and 48309 is Rochester, with Rochester Hills only an accepted alias, so a "Rochester, MI" rate page can be pricing Rochester Hills addresses.
By zip-codes.com's 2020 counts, 48306 holds about 28,455 people, 48307 about 44,673 and 48309 about 31,541, and 48306 also reaches into Oakland Township. Oakland University's own mailing address is Rochester, MI 48309. The City of Rochester, about 12,800 people, is a separate city on Rochester Hills' eastern edge. Sources: zip-codes.com, Oakland University, Census QuickFacts.
For pricing, the mailing label matters less than you'd expect. Michigan law bars rating by "the postal zone in which the insured resides" under MCL 500.2111(4)(f), while section 2111(5) lets insurers group risks by territory. So two Rochester Hills addresses can still price differently: by territory, not ZIP code. Source: MCL 500.2111.
Why Do Rochester Hills Estimates Differ by $100 a Month?
They price different policies for different people: real quotes versus modeled drivers, medians versus means, liability limits from below the legal minimum up to 100/300, and a PIP level most studies never state.
- Real quotes versus a modeled driver. Insurify reports what real shoppers aged 20 to 70 were quoted. ValuePenguin prices one 30-year-old; InsuranceQuotes.com prices one 40-year-old from Quadrant Information Services filed rates.
- Mean versus median. InsuranceQuotes.com averages each insurer's lowest eligible price per ZIP, so expensive carriers pull it up. Insurify's median shrugs off outliers.
- Liability limits. InsuranceQuotes.com's full coverage carries 100/300/100; Insurify's "full" uses liability at or below 50/100. Michigan's 250/500 default exceeds both.
- Unstated PIP. None of the three says which PIP level it priced, and that choice moves both the premium and the MCCA fee.
Ask who the sample driver is, which liability limits and PIP level were priced, and which area the page actually covers. A page that can't answer all three can't tell you what your car costs to insure.
What Moves a Rochester Hills Driver's Rate?
Your rating territory, PIP level, bodily injury limits, household drivers, vehicle and record move a Rochester Hills price far more than the mailing city printed on the policy.
Michigan bars ZIP-code rating but lets carriers file territories.
Several medical levels; MCCA fee of $84 unlimited, $19 otherwise.
Default 250/500; 50/100 only with a signed selection form.
116 deer crashes in Rochester Hills in 2024; Troy logged 78.
24.3-minute mean trip to work; Rochester Rd rebuild in 2027–28.
Insurify's Rochester-area teen liability average: $215 a month.
Commute, vehicle and credit. Rochester Hills' mean trip to work is 24.3 minutes, per Census QuickFacts, and mileage and use are rating inputs. A newer or pricier car raises the collision and comprehensive share. Insurify's sample requires credit of 600 or higher; how a carrier uses credit depends on Michigan rules and its filed plan, so ask.
Theft trends. Oakland County logged 1,247 vehicle thefts from January through October 2025, second in Michigan behind Wayne's 7,088, per the State Police ATPA annual report; that's roughly one per 1,000 residents, our arithmetic. The Sheriff's Office, which polices Rochester Hills by contract, leads the county auto theft unit. Nationally, thefts fell in every state in the first half of 2026, per NICB via Carrier Management.
How Much Do PIP and Liability Choices Change a Rochester Hills Quote?
The fixed piece is the MCCA fee, $84 per vehicle with unlimited PIP and $19 at any other level from July 1, 2026 through June 30, 2027; each carrier's PIP and liability pricing moves the rest.
These rules apply to every Rochester Hills quote. Sources: MCL 500.3107c, MCL 500.3009, MCL 500.3121, MCL 500.3135, DIFS No-Fault FAQ.
- PIP medical comes in several levels. MCL 500.3107c lists unlimited, $500,000, $250,000 and a $50,000 option tied to Medicaid, and points to an opt-out under MCL 500.3107d and a $250,000-with-exclusions option under MCL 500.3109a, each with qualifying rules.
- Bodily injury liability defaults to 250/500; the 50/100 floor takes a signed selection form, under MCL 500.3009(5).
- Property protection insurance pays up to $1 million for damage your car does to others' property, under MCL 500.3121.
- Mini-tort lets you recover up to $3,000 of vehicle damage your insurance doesn't cover from a driver more than 50% at fault, under MCL 500.3135.
For a two-car household, the MCCA line is $168 a year with unlimited PIP versus $38 at any other level, a $130 gap. Sources: MCCA assessment notice, MCCA 2026 Consumer Statement. The carrier's own PIP premium usually moves more, and no Rochester Hills study isolates it; our plain-English no-fault and PIP guide explains who qualifies for lower levels.
Electing 50/100 bodily injury instead of the 250/500 default can pull a quote toward the low end of the range, but it leaves far more of a serious crash on you. Match coverage first, then compare price.
How Do Deer and Rochester Hills Roads Show Up in the Price?
Mostly through comprehensive and collision pricing: Rochester Hills logged 116 deer crashes among 1,986 total crashes in 2024, and Oakland County ranked second in Michigan for deer crashes.
| Rochester Hills exposure | Local figure | Coverage that pays | Price relevance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Deer | 116 in Rochester Hills; 2,024 in Oakland County, 2nd in Michigan (2024) | Comprehensive | High |
| Crash volume | 1,986 crashes; 379 injury, 2 fatal (Rochester Hills/Avon Twp., 2024) | Collision, PIP, liability | High |
| Busy intersection | Livernois & Hamlin ranked #10 in Oakland County with 60 crashes in 2024; it isn't in the 2025-data top 10 (law-firm list) | Collision | Moderate |
| Road work | Rochester Rd (M-150) rebuild, M-59 to Tienken, 2027–28 | Collision | Moderate |
| Wind and debris | Aug 27, 2024: 4+ power poles snapped in Rochester Hills | Comprehensive | Moderate |
| Theft | 1,247 Oakland County thefts, Jan–Oct 2025; low per resident | Comprehensive | Lower |
Statewide, Michigan recorded 58,324 vehicle-deer crashes in 2024, with November (10,017) and October (9,428) the worst months, per the state's deer crash report. Oakland County's 2,024 trailed only Kent County's 2,097.
MDOT will spend $40 million rebuilding Rochester Road (M-150) from M-59 to Tienken in 2027 and 2028, per its announcement, with one lane in one direction during alternating windows, per WXYZ. Livernois and Hamlin ranked #10 in Michigan Auto Law's 2024-data list of Oakland County intersections, reported by WDIV; the firm's September 2026 update, built on 2025 data, has no Rochester Hills intersection in its top 10. The pole count is from the National Weather Service.
Liability-only pays nothing toward your own car after a deer strike, a theft or a falling limb, the Rochester Hills claims that don't depend on anyone else's fault.
What Does a Teen Driver or Oakland University Student Add?
Often more than any other single change: Insurify's Rochester-area liability averages run $215 a month for teens versus $114 for drivers 70 and older, and Oakland University enrolled 15,252 students in fall 2026.
Those are group averages for liability coverage from Insurify's October 20, 2026 update, so read the gap, not the dollars. Source: Insurify. Oakland University reports 2,046 students on campus, so roughly 13,200 live off campus, by our subtraction. Source: OU Fast Facts. A student keeping a car at an off-campus apartment should give carriers that garaging address.
What Changed for Rochester Hills Car Insurance Prices in 2026?
The MCCA fee reset to $84 and $19 on July 1, 2026, the major rate studies refreshed their Rochester-area figures in October, and the state's reform report measured savings against no reform, which isn't the same as rates falling.
The MCCA fee. Through June 30, 2027, it's $84 per vehicle with unlimited PIP ($65 pure premium plus $19 deficit recoupment) and $19 at every other level, a $2 increase and a $4 decrease from the prior year, per the MCCA's Consumer Statement. On October 12, 2026, the MCCA announced that the fee will drop for the 2027–28 assessment year, which begins July 1, 2027.
The DIFS/Milliman reform report. Released December 2, 2025, it estimated "average overall savings of $357 per vehicle" compared with what premiums would have been without the reform. Source: DIFS. Michigan Public reported the same report shows average rates rose by close to $200 from 2019 to 2024. Both hold: savings against a hypothetical, while actual bills climbed.
Fresher numbers. ValuePenguin and Insurify refreshed their figures on October 13 and October 20, 2026, so older citations of either are stale.

What Else Do Rochester Hills Drivers Ask About Car Insurance Cost?
These five questions cover the Rochester Hills cost issues that statewide rate studies skip.
Does Insurify's $228 "Rochester, MI" figure apply to Rochester Hills drivers?
Largely, with a caveat. The Postal Service files Rochester Hills' residential ZIPs, 48306, 48307 and 48309, under the city name Rochester, so Insurify's "Rochester, MI" page, updated October 20, 2026, takes in Rochester Hills addresses. But the page never names Rochester Hills, and the same ZIPs also cover the separate City of Rochester and part of Oakland Township.
That's why we attribute it as a Rochester-area figure. If you want a number with the city's name on it, ValuePenguin's $255 a month, updated October 13, 2026, is the only one we found. Both are averages for sample drivers, not quotes.
Why might two Rochester Hills addresses get different car insurance prices?
Because insurers rate by territory. Michigan law bars using "the postal zone in which the insured resides" as a rating factor under MCL 500.2111(4)(f), but section 2111(5) lets carriers group risks by territory, and the DIFS No-Fault FAQ says companies must "file their territorial definitions." Those lines needn't follow city or ZIP boundaries.
So a house near Tienken Road and a condo near M-59 can fall in different territories with one carrier and the same territory with another. Always quote at the address where the car is garaged overnight.
How much does an Oakland University student add to a Rochester Hills family's car insurance?
No publisher prices that exact situation, but the available numbers point the same way. Insurify's Rochester-area liability averages, updated October 20, 2026, are $215 a month for teens against $114 for drivers 70 and older. Oakland University enrolled 15,252 students in fall 2026, and only 2,046 live on campus, so most live off campus, and many of them drive.
The added cost depends on whether the student stays on the household policy, which car they drive most, where it's garaged during the term, and their record. Compare the household total, not the student's line alone.
Will the 2027–28 Rochester Road rebuild raise car insurance rates in Rochester Hills?
Not directly. Carriers don't surcharge for a construction project; they set territory rates from claim experience over time. What changes is exposure. MDOT will spend $40 million rebuilding M-150 from M-59 to Tienken Road in 2027 and 2028, and WXYZ reports traffic will drop to one lane in one direction during alternating windows.
More stop-and-go driving on the city's main north-south route can mean more low-speed collisions. Your own at-fault claims are what typically move your premium at renewal. If another driver hits you, Michigan's mini-tort lets you recover up to $3,000 of vehicle damage your own insurance doesn't cover.
How much does the MCCA fee add to a two-car Rochester Hills policy in 2026–27?
For policies issued or renewed from July 1, 2026 through June 30, 2027, the Michigan Catastrophic Claims Association fee is $84 per vehicle with unlimited PIP and $19 per vehicle at every other PIP level. For two cars, that's $168 a year with unlimited PIP or $38 otherwise, a $130 difference.
The $84 is $65 of pure premium plus $19 of deficit recoupment. On October 12, 2026, the MCCA announced that the fee will drop for the 2027–28 assessment year, which begins July 1, 2027. Each carrier's own PIP premium usually moves the total more, so compare unlimited and limited quotes side by side.
The Bottom Line on Rochester Hills Car Insurance Costs
There's no single honest Rochester Hills number: the lowest credible figure is Insurify's $228 a month for the Rochester, MI area, ValuePenguin's Rochester Hills figure is $255, and 2026 studies reach $328.
Where you land depends on your PIP level, liability limits, drivers, vehicle, record and rating territory. What does liability-only car insurance cost in the Rochester area? Insurify's Rochester, MI page shows $142 a month in its body text and $130 in its FAQ, both on the October 20, 2026 update, an inconsistency on the publisher's side.
