How Do You Compare Home & Auto Insurance Quotes
in Lansing, MI?

✍️ By Terry Smith · Licensed Michigan Insurance Agent · ⏱ 14 min read · 📅 Updated · 📍 Lansing, East Lansing & Okemos
⚡ Comparing Lansing Quotes in 60 Seconds

To compare home and auto insurance quotes in Lansing, MI, make every quote price the same coverage: one PIP medical level, 250/500 bodily injury limits, matching UM/UIM and deductibles on the car; one rebuild-cost dwelling limit, replacement-cost settlement, wind/hail deductible and sewer backup limit on the house. Then compare full-year totals, bundled and split. As of October 2026, MoneyGeek's Michigan study shows bundle discounts of 5% to 22% by carrier, so price both ways.

Comparing home and auto insurance quotes in Lansing usually starts with three totals and no clear winner. Look closer and the quotes rarely priced the same thing. One assumed unlimited PIP and 250/500 liability; another dropped to 50/100. One set the dwelling limit near what your house would sell for; another priced a full rebuild. And no major rate site publishes a Lansing bundle price. Here's how to line the quotes up so the lowest number means something.

Why Do Lansing Home and Auto Quotes Come Back So Far Apart?

Mostly different coverage assumptions, not different prices: each company fills in PIP, liability and dwelling amounts its own way unless you specify them.

Published Lansing averages show the effect. Insurify put full-coverage car insurance at $210 a month on its page updated October 16, 2026, while MoneyGeek's Lansing page, updated September 24, 2026, showed $126. Different profiles explain most of that, and most rate sites never say which PIP level they priced.

Home figures split the same way. MoneyGeek's Michigan cost page (May 21, 2026) put Lansing at $1,675 a year on a $250,000 dwelling, while NerdWallet (March 4, 2026) showed $2,415 on a $400,000 dwelling. Here's what has to match before price means anything:

How Do You Compare Lansing Home and Auto Quotes Step by Step?

Fix one set of auto and home choices, quote it through more than one channel, convert to full-year totals, then test a bundle against a split.

  1. 1

Pull both declarations pages and your household facts

Gather both declarations pages, every VIN, each driver's birth date and license number, your roof's age, and recent claims or tickets.

  2. 2

    Set one auto specification

Choose one PIP level, keep bodily injury at the 250/500 default unless you deliberately sign for less, and fix identical UM/UIM limits, deductibles and mini-tort.

  3. 3

    Set one home specification

Use one rebuild-cost dwelling limit, replacement cost on dwelling and roof, one deductible structure including wind/hail, and one sewer backup limit.

  4. 4

Quote that spec through an agent and a direct site

Give the same specification to an independent agent, who prices several carriers at once, and to any direct company you want to test.

  5. 5

Put every quote on a full-year basis

Double six-month auto premiums, add the annual home premium, and check each quote against your specification before looking at price.

  6. 6

    Test bundles against a split

Compare each bundled total with the cheapest standalone home plus the cheapest standalone auto, even from two companies, and keep the lowest total.

  7. 7

    Switch without a coverage gap

Start each new policy the day the old one ends, confirm the home details the insurer used, and tell your lender if you pay through escrow.

💡 Terry's Tip

Email both declarations pages before we talk. We copy your current coverage line for line, so the first comparison you see is like-for-like.

What Should Lansing Households Gather Before Requesting Quotes?

Both declarations pages, every vehicle and driver, PIP health-coverage details, your home's age and updates, and claims history, so quotes hold up at issue.

The declarations page summarizes your limits, deductibles and endorsements, so anyone can copy your current coverage. Bring:

About half of Lansing's homes were built before 1960, per a Census-based compilation from Point2Homes, so give every company the same update years.

What Has to Match on a Lansing Auto Quote?

The PIP level, bodily injury and UM/UIM limits, both physical-damage deductibles and mini-tort, because each changes the premium and companies default them differently.

Start with PIP. Michigan offers six medical choices: unlimited; $500,000; $250,000; $250,000 with exclusions for people with qualifying health coverage; $50,000 for Medicaid enrollees; or an opt-out for those with Medicare Parts A and B. Sources: MCL 500.3107c, DIFS No-Fault FAQ. Pick one and quote it everywhere.

Liability comes next. Under MCL 500.3009, bodily injury limits default to $250,000 per person and $500,000 per accident, and you can go as low as 50/100 only by signing a selection form under MCL 500.3009(5). Property protection insurance (up to $1 million in Michigan, under MCL 500.3121) comes with every policy.

⚠️ The Quote That Looks Too Good

If one Lansing quote lands far below the rest, check for 50/100 liability, a different PIP level or missing mini-tort. Mini-tort coverage pays the up to $3,000 another driver can recover from you for vehicle damage when you're mostly at fault, under MCL 500.3135. Less coverage isn't a better deal.

Match the comprehensive and collision deductibles too, and ask each company which one applies to an animal strike. Meridian Township logged 83 deer-involved crashes in 2024, more than the Ingham portion of Lansing (79) on a fifth as many total crashes, per Michigan Traffic Crash Facts.

Keep coverage continuous while switching; driving uninsured can mean a $200 to $500 fine and up to a year in jail under MCL 500.3102. For prices, see what Lansing drivers pay for car insurance, and why.

What Has to Match on a Lansing-Area Home Quote?

The dwelling limit set to rebuild cost, replacement-cost or actual-cash-value settlement, the deductible structure including any wind/hail deductible, and the sewer backup endorsement with its limit.

Settle the dwelling limit first. Census QuickFacts puts the median owner-occupied home value at $128,700 in Lansing and $359,200 in Okemos. Those are market values that include land; they don't measure rebuild cost. NerdWallet cites a $398,043 median Michigan rebuild cost from First Street data. Pick one rebuild figure and requote everyone at it.

Then check settlement: replacement cost pays without subtracting depreciation, actual cash value subtracts it, sometimes on the roof only. For an older Lansing home, also ask whether ordinance or law coverage is included; it helps pay to rebuild to current code.

🚨 Do the Storm-Deductible Math

A percentage wind/hail deductible is figured on the dwelling limit, not on the claim. At 2% of a $300,000 dwelling limit, you'd pay the first $6,000 of a storm claim. On May 15, 2025, the National Weather Service confirmed an EF-1 tornado that moved from Eaton County into Lansing (FOX 47). The Board of Water & Light reported about 24,000 outages (BWL), and the governor declared a state of emergency (WILX).

Sewer backup is where look-alike quotes split. DIFS says "water and sewer back-up is also not automatically covered under a homeowners or renters policy" (DIFS). The fix is a water backup endorsement with its own limit, as MoneyGeek explains. Match the dollar limit, not just the checkbox.

No home quote includes flood. The Grand River at Lansing crested at 15.43 feet in 1975 (WFMK), and in February 2018 the Red Cedar closed several Okemos streets (WKAR). Carrier fit for houses like these is covered in choosing a Lansing home insurer.

Does Bundling Home and Auto Actually Save Money in Lansing?

Often, but by no fixed amount: published Michigan bundle discounts run 5% to 22% by carrier, and nobody prices a Lansing bundle, so test bundled and split totals yourself.

No page we found prices a Lansing bundle. The closest data is MoneyGeek's Michigan bundle study, updated May 7, 2026. It used 1,600 quotes across 16 Michigan ZIP codes, none named as Lansing, for a 40-year-old driver, a 2021 Camry and a $250,000 home:

CarrierBundled annual priceBundle discountAnnual savings
AAA$2,43513%$377
Progressive$3,778 (2nd-lowest)5%$193
Farmers$4,68218%$1,025
State Farm$4,82622%$1,350
Allstate$5,02411%$616

Source: MoneyGeek, May 7, 2026. Sample-profile figures, not quotes; auto priced at 50/100 liability, below Michigan's 250/500 default.

5%
Progressive's bundle discount was the smallest of the five carriers in MoneyGeek's May 2026 Michigan study, yet its bundled total of $3,778 was the second-lowest. A big discount isn't a low price.

Farmers took 18% off ($1,025) and State Farm 22% ($1,350), yet both bundled totals landed above Progressive's; AAA had the lowest total at 13%. A discount is a percentage of each company's own price, so a big percentage on a high price can still lose.

Insurance.com shows why each figure needs its own date. Its Michigan homeowners page, updated September 30, 2026, reports average bundle savings of $356 a year, or 19%, with Farmers at 20%. Its Michigan bundle page, updated April 20, 2026, uses a different profile and has no Lansing row.

The pages disagree even on one company (State Farm: 32% on the homeowners page, 22% on the bundle page), so treat each as a dated sample, not a Lansing forecast.

Nationally, Insurance.com's bundling analysis (November 12, 2025) found an average 14% saving, plus cases where splitting won: a $4,706 Travelers bundle lost to Travelers auto plus Amica home at $3,587, and a $4,568 Progressive bundle lost to Progressive auto plus Mercury home at $3,386. See our Michigan home and auto bundling guide for carrier details.

Carrier Comparison Disclosure

Methodology: figures are published results for each source's sample profile, dated as shown. They are not quotes or what you'll pay.

Relationships: Terry Smith Agency is an independent agency appointed directly with Farmers, Progressive, Bristol West and Foremost, and we reach additional Michigan carriers through the Kraft Lake brokerage.

Availability: we are not appointed with AAA, State Farm, Allstate, Travelers, Amica or Mercury, and nothing here implies we can quote them. Kraft Lake access varies by carrier and situation. If a company we can't place fits you better, we'll tell you.

When Does Splitting Home and Auto Beat a Bundle in Lansing?

When the cheapest auto policy and the cheapest home policy for your household come from different companies, and the gap between them is bigger than the multi-policy discount you'd give up.

A split is two standalone policies. You lose the multi-policy discount, so it wins only when each half is priced well on its own, which happens because companies price drivers and houses by different rules.

Bristol West is a clean example. It writes auto insurance only, with no home policy to bundle, so when it fits your drivers it becomes the auto half of a split by definition. In Insurify's Lansing data (October 16, 2026), Bristol West's average liability rate was $125 a month, ninth of the 14 carriers listed.

On the home side, Foremost is a Michigan-founded company, started in 1952 and part of Farmers since 2000 (Foremost). Policygenius notes it insures older homes, including ones "showing obvious signs of wear and tear" (Policygenius review, 2023). For an older Lansing house, that can make it the stronger home half.

Should Lansing Shoppers Use an Independent Agent or Online Quote Tools?

Use both: an online tool prices one company with you setting every field, while an independent agent prices several companies from one conversation.

An online quote is fast and you control every input, which is also the risk: it's easy to accept a pre-filled PIP level or dwelling amount without noticing. A captive agent can show only one company's price.

An independent agent quotes several companies from one set of answers. For us that's Farmers, Progressive, Bristol West and Foremost directly, plus additional Michigan carriers through Kraft Lake. That isn't the whole market, so one online quote on matched settings is a smart cross-check. The tradeoffs are in our guide to independent agents versus online quotes in Michigan.

Also ask about affinity discounts: Farmers offers them for eligible professions such as teachers, nurses and first responders, confirmed when we quote.

What Changed for Lansing Home and Auto Quotes in 2026?

A new MCCA fee took effect July 1, 2026, new rules govern how insurers use aerial images of your roof, and storm losses keep pressure on home rates.

About the author: Terry Smith

What Do Lansing Households Ask About Comparing Home and Auto Quotes?

They cover missing Lansing bundle data, discount math, Okemos home values, student drivers and how we serve the area from Battle Creek.

Does anyone publish home and auto bundle prices for Lansing specifically?

Not that we could find as of October 2026. MoneyGeek's May 7, 2026 Michigan bundle study priced 16 Michigan ZIP codes without naming Lansing, and Insurance.com's April 20, 2026 Michigan bundle page lists city results with no Lansing row. Statewide figures price one sample household, not yours.

The practical answer is to build your own Lansing comparison: a bundled total from each of two companies, plus the cheapest standalone home and auto pair, all on matched coverage. One conversation with an independent agent can cover all three.

Is the biggest bundle discount usually the best deal for a Lansing household?

No. A bundle discount is a percentage of each company's own price, so a large percentage can still leave you with a higher total. In MoneyGeek's May 2026 Michigan study, Progressive's discount was the smallest at 5%, yet its bundled price of $3,778 was the second-lowest of the five carriers shown, below both Farmers at 18% and State Farm at 22%.

Compare dollars, not percentages, and only on matched coverage. Your own Lansing quotes may rank the companies differently from any published study.

How should I compare home quotes for an Okemos house versus a Lansing house?

The method is the same; the stakes differ. Census QuickFacts puts the median owner-occupied home value at $359,200 in Okemos versus $128,700 in Lansing, so dwelling limits and premiums can be far apart only a few miles away. In both places, set the dwelling limit to an estimated rebuild cost rather than market value, and use that same figure on every quote.

Okemos households should also match comprehensive deductibles on their cars, since Meridian Township logged 83 deer-involved crashes in 2024, and check Red Cedar River flood exposure before comparing.

How do I list an MSU student when comparing Lansing-area auto quotes?

List the student the same way on every quote: same driver, same vehicle assignment, and the same answer about where the car is kept during the school year. If one quote includes the student and another leaves them off, the comparison is meaningless.

Michigan's insurance regulator, DIFS, advises that joining a parent's policy will usually be cheaper than a separate policy for a young driver, but confirm it with matched quotes for your household. Michigan State reported 50,941 students in fall 2026. Ask which student discounts apply, then compare totals.

Can Terry Smith Agency compare Lansing home and auto quotes without a Lansing office?

Yes. We're a licensed Michigan agency based in Battle Creek, about an hour from Lansing via I-69, and we work with Lansing, East Lansing and Okemos households by phone, email and video. An accurate comparison runs on documents, not a storefront.

Call (269) 404-4049 or send your declarations pages, and we'll return bundled and split options lined up against your current coverage. If your current policy is the better deal, or a company we can't place looks like a better fit, we'll say so.

What's the Bottom Line on Comparing Lansing Home and Auto Quotes?

Match the coverage first, compare full-year totals second, and treat any quote far cheaper than the rest as a coverage question until the declarations pages prove otherwise.

Set one PIP level, liability and rebuild-cost dwelling limit, match deductibles and sewer backup, and price bundles in dollars against a split. Then start your Lansing home and auto quote, or see how we approach home insurance coverage, and we'll compare against what you have now.

These quick answers cover the MCCA fee, flood coverage, Bristol West splits, and East Lansing rentals.

Why is the MCCA charge identical on my Lansing auto quotes? Because the Michigan Catastrophic Claims Association sets it per vehicle by PIP choice, not the insurer: $84 with unlimited PIP and $19 with any other level for policies starting July 1, 2026 through June 30, 2027. Same PIP level, same fee, at every company.

Does a Lansing home quote cover flooding from the Grand River or Red Cedar? No. Standard homeowners policies exclude flood, so it needs a separate policy, typically through the National Flood Insurance Program. With FEMA's preliminary Ingham County maps presented in August 2026, check your parcel's status before you compare, and price flood separately from the home and auto totals.

Can my Lansing auto go with Bristol West while my home stays elsewhere? Yes. Bristol West writes auto only, so pairing it with a separate home policy is a normal split. You won't get a multi-policy discount across two companies, so compare that combined total against at least one bundle on matched coverage. The lower full-year total wins.

Does an East Lansing rental house need a different quote than my own home? Usually. A standard homeowners policy is built for a home you live in, and a house rented to tenants generally needs a landlord or dwelling-fire policy instead. With about 61.5% of East Lansing's occupied homes rented, based on Census owner-occupancy figures, price landlord coverage separately from your own home and auto.
